Joint statement on the role of LNG in Europe’s energy transition
IOGP Europe, together with Eurogas, GIE, GIIGNL, SEA-LNG and SGMF signed a joint statement under the LNG Protocol initiative to highlight the strategic role of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Europe’s evolving energy landscape. The statement outlines how LNG has proven essential for the EU’s security of supply, particularly following the disruption of Russian pipeline flows. It calls on policymakers to support investments in LNG infrastructure, promote long-term contracts, and ensure a level playing field for sustainable gases, as Europe moves toward a diversified and resilient energy mix.
The document also positions LNG as a key enabler of the energy transition. It emphasizes the potential of LNG terminals to evolve into hybrid hubs capable of handling low-carbon molecules such as biomethane, synthetic methane, ammonia, and hydrogen. The statement advocates for policy coherence at EU and national levels, alignment with international reporting standards, and the removal of trade barriers for renewable and low-carbon fuels. The signatories underline the need for a technology-neutral approach and a supportive regulatory framework to help LNG contribute to EU climate goals while maintaining competitiveness and security of supply.
