Keeping industry running: Why addressing natural gas demand matters for Europe’s industry competitiveness

A High-Level Lunch Debate Hosted by the European Energy Forum
Wednesday, 21 October 2025 | 19:30-21:00 CEST | European Parliament, Strasbourg (France)

As the EU advances towards climate neutrality, ensuring energy security, driving decarbonisation, and safeguarding economic competitiveness remain among Europe’s most pressing challenges.

Natural gas and crude oil still represent nearly 60% of the EU’s energy mix, and Europe’s energy-intensive industries, in particular the chemical sector, continue to rely on gas not only as an energy source but also as a feedstock for essential products such as medicines and fertilisers.

This debate will explore how Europe can navigate this complex landscape by diversifying energy sources and supply routes, strengthening infrastructure, and incentivising investment to secure industrial competitiveness today and throughout the transition towards climate neutrality.

Speakers will share concrete recommendations for pragmatic decarbonisation pathways in light of the 2040 target, the role of European energy resources, and how policy coherence can enhance market functioning and investor confidence, all in order to secure a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system and a successful European industry.

Join us for this timely discussion on how Europe can safeguard its energy future while staying on course with its climate and industrial ambitions.
