The EU’s Self-Inflicted Supply Gap | The EU Methane Regulation (EUMR) | Drilling Down ep 7
The EU Methane Regulation (EUMR) will be imposing new importer requirements on oil and gas companies as of the beginning of 2027.
This could lead to 43% of natural gas and 87% of oil imports being excluded from the EU market due to non-compliance according to this study: https://iogpeurope.org/projects/the-impact-of-the-eu-methane-regulation/
The result? An energy supply gap for the EU, demand destruction, unaffordable energy, and increasing security of supply concerns. Amrit Naresh, Director of Energy Consulting at Wood Mackenzie joins us on this episode of Drilling Down to break down the findings of a study commissioned by Fuels Europe and IOGP Europe that analyzes the true impact of the EUMR on the global energy market.

European Oil & Gas Reserves – Interactive Map
As the world releases a historic amount of emergency oil stocks, Europe should remember another strategic asset it possesses: its natural reserves and resources of oil and gas!
Our interactive maps allow you to explore the EU’s geological oil & gas reserves and resources at a glance. What’s the difference between resources and reserves?
Reserves are volumes that are discovered and commercially recoverable within current technology and economic conditions.
Resources are volumes identified but not yet commercially viable or technologically recoverable. Stay up to date on the EU’s evolving energy landscape – including the strategic role which oil and gas continues to play in ensuring Europe’s energy independence, security of supply and strategic autonomy.

A Deep Dive Into the Risks of the EU Methane Regulation | Drilling Down Ep 6
The EU Methane Regulation needs a reality check. The ambition is right, but specific provisions may jeopardize EU Energy supply.
This episode dives deep into the potential risks that the EU Methane Regulation (EUMR) could pose, if serious changes are not made.
Join methane policy expert Emils and head of comms and strategy Nareg as they break down the intricacies of the Regulation, layout the legislative progress over the last year, and make recommendations on how to fix the EUMR.
Discussion topics:
- What is the EU Methane Regulation and how far along is the legislative process? Who is affected by the EU Methane Regulation?
- Diving into current roadblocks that make aspects of the Regulation unimplementable.
- Discussing the penalties of non-compliance.
- Offering solutions that could make the Regulation more realistic and implementable, while still allowing it to reach the core goal of reducing methane emissions.
“The problem is in the promise”: A reality check for the EU’s Hydrogen Strategy | Drilling Down Ep 5
The problem with low carbon hydrogen is not in the fuel itself, but in the lack of realism and pragmatism required when the ambitions for the EU’s hydrogen market were set.
As 2030 looms in the distance, it has become clear that reaching the targets set in both the REPowerEU plan, and the EU Hydrogen Strategy, will not be easily achievable. The technology prescriptive approach of the EU Hydrogen Strategy greatly limits Europe’s ability to meet the targets of 10 Mt imports and 10 Mt domestic production of renewable hydrogen and does not enable a functioning Hydrogen market in Europe. However, with the right adjustments, the EU can still ramp up the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors and provide the needed quantities of clean affordable hydrogen both locally produced or imported.
Together with Octav Baciu, energy & climate policy officer at IOGP Europe, we discussed the development of hydrogen markets around the world to see what the EU could do to improve its approach.
Discussion topics:
- Why is it important to develop the hydrogen market?
- Explaining the current state of the EU’s hydrogen market, and how do we compare it to the rest of the world?
- Diving into current roadblocks that are hindering the hydrogen market’s development. Exploring the role of low carbon hydrogen and its benefits.
- Outlining opportunities available to the EU that can further incentivize production and demand for low carbon hydrogen.

- Certification of low-carbon fuels
- The 70% threshold for qualification
- Equivalence for domestic and imported hydrogen
- Key principle for adoption
