Press Release: European Parliament backs meaningful simplification of sustainability rules

Brussels, 13 November 2025: By calling for much-needed improvements to the European Commission’s simplification proposal, the European Parliament’s vote today signals policymakers’ determination to advance the EU’s regulatory simplification agenda in a meaningful manner. As omnibuses in the fields of energy and environment are under preparation, this sends a strong signal for regulation to work in favor of European businesses’ competitiveness while preserving security of supply and sustainability goals.

IOGP Europe welcomes this outcome, which recognizes that Europe’s competitiveness and sustainability ambitions must go hand-in-hand. The Parliament’s position introduces clearer and more proportionate requirements for companies, reduces duplication between reporting and due-diligence obligations, and aligns with the broader push to streamline the EU’s regulatory framework for business.

We do however regret the Parliament’s proposal to re-introduce sector-specific standards which the Commission itself had rightly recommended to drop in order to avoid adding an unnecessary and substantial reporting burden on companies.

“The Parliament sent a clear signal in favor of European competitiveness – we hope the Council will rise to the challenge by updating its negotiation mandate and preserve this ambition throughout the upcoming inter-institutional negotiations,” said François-Régis Mouton de Lostalot, Managing Director of IOGP Europe. “The stakes are too high for half-measures – we either simplify rules to try and prevent investor flight and deindustrialization, or we don’t and watch our continent’s decline continue.”

IOGP Europe remains committed to constructive dialogue with policymakers and stakeholders to ensure that Europe’s sustainability framework remains credible, workable and supportive of the investments required to meet its climate and energy objectives.

The goal should be a final, revised text that improves regulatory coherence and legal certainty, while avoiding new administrative burdens that risk diverting investment and resources away from the energy transition.
