EU delivers landmark decision in quest to cut red tape, strengthen competitiveness and security of supply

Brussels, 9 December 2025: The agreement reached by EU co-legislators on the Simplification Omnibus marks an important first step towards streamlining of the regulatory framework. We urge policymakers to take the same approach in upcoming energy and environment simplification efforts, ensuring regulation supports Europe’s competitiveness while maintaining security of supply and sustainability goals.

The outcome of the inter-institutional negotiations is a clear recognition that Europe’s competitiveness and sustainability objectives must go hand-in-hand. It clarifies and rationalizes company requirements, reduces overlap between reporting and due-diligence rules, and contributes to the broader drive to simplify the EU’s regulatory landscape for businesses.

This agreement is recognition that Europe cannot hope to remain competitive with rules that are needlessly complex. The outcome shows that simplification is possible without weakening sustainability ambitions and jeopardizing security of supply - now this mindset must carry over to future Omnibus packages. Europe’s ability to retain a competitive industrial advantage depends on it” said François-Régis Mouton de Lostalot, Managing Director of IOGP Europe.

IOGP Europe will keep working with policymakers and stakeholders to ensure Europe’s sustainability rules stay credible, practical, and aligned with the investments needed for its competitiveness and energy goals.
