21 Energy Associations sign a Joint industry reaction to the EU Methane Regulation Recommendations

IOGP Europe, with 20 trade and national associations, today issue a joint industry reaction to the European Commission’s two recommendations on the EU Methane Regulation (EUMR), on penalties and on voluntary compliance approaches, published on 20 July.  

While all efforts to support implementation of the EUMR are welcome, non-binding recommendations left to the discretion of national enforcement are not sufficient in delivering the uniform legal certainty that Europe needs. As a result, the EU continues to face a significant risk to its energy supply when the EUMR importer requirements take effect from 1 January 2027. 

IOGP Europe and co-signatories continue to call for fast-tracked, targeted amendments to the Regulation, including a 3-year postponement of the importer requirements, in order to preserve the Regulation’s methane reduction ambition without jeopardizing Europe’s security of energy supply. 

The joint industry reaction also includes an annex that lists elements in the two EUMR recommendations requiring further clarification.
