A Deep Dive Into the Risks of the EU Methane Regulation | Drilling Down Ep 6
The EU Methane Regulation needs a reality check. The ambition is right, but specific provisions may jeopardize EU Energy supply.
This episode dives deep into the potential risks that the EU Methane Regulation (EUMR) could pose, if serious changes are not made.
Join methane policy expert Emils and head of comms and strategy Nareg as they break down the intricacies of the Regulation, layout the legislative progress over the last year, and make recommendations on how to fix the EUMR.
Discussion topics:
- What is the EU Methane Regulation and how far along is the legislative process? Who is affected by the EU Methane Regulation?
- Diving into current roadblocks that make aspects of the Regulation unimplementable.
- Discussing the penalties of non-compliance.
- Offering solutions that could make the Regulation more realistic and implementable, while still allowing it to reach the core goal of reducing methane emissions.
“The problem is in the promise”: A reality check for the EU’s Hydrogen Strategy | Drilling Down Ep 5
The problem with low carbon hydrogen is not in the fuel itself, but in the lack of realism and pragmatism required when the ambitions for the EU’s hydrogen market were set.
As 2030 looms in the distance, it has become clear that reaching the targets set in both the REPowerEU plan, and the EU Hydrogen Strategy, will not be easily achievable. The technology prescriptive approach of the EU Hydrogen Strategy greatly limits Europe’s ability to meet the targets of 10 Mt imports and 10 Mt domestic production of renewable hydrogen and does not enable a functioning Hydrogen market in Europe. However, with the right adjustments, the EU can still ramp up the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors and provide the needed quantities of clean affordable hydrogen both locally produced or imported.
Together with Octav Baciu, energy & climate policy officer at IOGP Europe, we discussed the development of hydrogen markets around the world to see what the EU could do to improve its approach.
Discussion topics:
- Why is it important to develop the hydrogen market?
- Explaining the current state of the EU’s hydrogen market, and how do we compare it to the rest of the world?
- Diving into current roadblocks that are hindering the hydrogen market’s development. Exploring the role of low carbon hydrogen and its benefits.
- Outlining opportunities available to the EU that can further incentivize production and demand for low carbon hydrogen.
CCS Bank: a game changer for Europe? With Klaas Verwer | Drilling Down ep.4
CCS deployment is too slow in Europe. This puts the EU’s competitiveness and industrial decarbonization at risk. Could a CCS Bank be the game changer Europe needs?
Through effective implementation, this initiative, along with other measures along the full value chain, can drive forward CCS commercial deployment. Together with Klaas Verwer, IOGP Europe’s expert representative at the European Commission Innovation Fund Expert Group (IFEG), we discuss how CCS has evolved, the benefits of the CCS Bank as a mechanism and its core objectives. Europe has the tools and the framework ready. All we need now is to take action.
Discussion topics:
- CCS policy and business developments.
- Objectives of a CCS Bank.
- Functioning of the CCS Bank.
EU Hydrogen Policy – Secondary Legislation Phase Begins
With the publication of the EU Hydrogen and Decarbonized Gas Package, what’s next for Hydrogen policy in the EU?
Together with Gaetana Manganiello, IOGP Europe’s hydrogen expert, we discuss the start of the so-called ‘Secondary Legislation’ phase and in particular the Delegated Act which will define much of the details of hydrogen market rules to come in the EU.
Discussion topics:
- Where we are the process
- Certification of low-carbon fuels
- The 70% threshold for qualification
- Equivalence for domestic and imported hydrogen
- Key principle for adoption

Dissecting Europe’s energy crisis with Anne-Sophie Corbeau
Why was Europe’s energy supply crisis so severe? Has European industrial activity recovered?
How can decisionmakers navigate and strengthen Europe’s energy system going forward?
As Europe comes out of the second Winter after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the impact of the war on energy markets, we asked Anne-Sophie Corbeau, Global Research Scholar at the Columbia Center for Energy Policy, to share her views.
Discussion topics:
- Look back at the 2022-2023 energy supply crisis
- The state of European industrial gas demand
- Recommendations for policymakers
