The exclusive launch of OMEC’s flagship publication on Mediterranean Energy Perspectives 2025 (MEP 2025) took place in Brussels.
IOGP Europe and OMEC were pleased to co-host this high-level policy event on 3 September 2025, marking the official release of OMEC’s Mediterranean Energy Perspectives 2025 (MEP 2025).
Held one month ahead of the anticipated adoption of the European Commission’s “New Pact for the Mediterranean,” the timely event brought together senior policymakers, institutional leaders, and industry executives to explore the Mediterranean’s pivotal role in Europe’s energy transition, security of supply, and competitiveness in a changing geopolitical landscape.
The event featured:
- The official presentation of MEP 2025, the most comprehensive energy outlook for the Mediterranean region to date.
- Two high-level panel discussions on:
-The region’s net-zero pathways and investment outlook to 2050
-The evolving role of gas in balancing energy security and decarbonization
- Contributions from leading figures in the European Commission, European Parliament, national governments, OMEC, and industry leaders from across the energy sector.
9:30-10:00 CEST | 30 min | Registrations & welcome coffee
10:00-10:10 CEST | 10 min | Opening remarks

- Lapo Pistelli, Chairman, OMEC
10:10-10:40 CEST | 30 min | Presentation of the report
- Houda Ben Jannet, General Director, OMEC
Overview of the report
- Comprehensive Energy Outlook: MEP 2025 offers an in-depth analysis of the Mediterranean energy landscape, projecting scenarios up to 2050.
- Focus on Transition: Emphasizes the region’s shift towards sustainable energy amid evolving geopolitical, technological, and economic dynamics.
- EU’s Renewed Commitment: The EU has reaffirmed its strategic focus on the Mediterranean, with energy as a top priority.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Serves as a reference for energy and climate experts, policymakers, and industry, enabling informed decision-making.
- Platform for Collaboration: MEP 2025 provides a framework to foster partnerships and support regional energy goals.
10:40-11:20 CEST | 60 min | Panel 1 - Charting the Course to 2050
A deep dive into MEP 2025 insights: energy mix, demand forecasts, and pathways to net-zero by 2050.
The Mediterranean Energy Perspectives 2025 gives us more than projections - it provides direction. As climate deadlines tighten and geopolitical realities evolve, the region must align policy with credible pathways to net-zero. This panel decodes the report’s most strategic insights - from evolving energy demand to regional supply scenarios - and explores how industry and institutions can transform them into investable, scalable action. With voices from governments, OMEC, the IEA, and the European Commission, this is the roadmap session.
Key questions
- What are the key takeaways from MEP 2025 for the region’s energy strategy?
- How can policy and industry use these scenarios to drive investment?

Gas is at the centre of Europe’s energy and security conversation with a special focus on the Mediterranean region, but its potential could be further leveraged. This panel will focus on the dilemma: how to protect critical energy flows while staying on track with decarbonization goals. We’ll look at new infrastructure, geopolitical bottlenecks, cross-border cooperation, and the role of gas and low-carbon technologies as stabilisers and enablers of the transition. Expect a grounded yet forward-thinking dialogue between governments, producers, and the Commission.
Key questions
- What are the regional security vulnerabilities in the current energy infrastructure?
- What are the key challenges to making significant progress in the development of low-carbon technologies?
- How can cross-border cooperation enhance both security and sustainability?
